Geotechnical Investigation

Hydrographic survey

Hydrographic survey is a process that measures and records the physical features of bodies of water and the land around them. The data collected from a hydrographic survey is used to create nautical charts and is essential for maritime navigation, construction, and other activities.

Here are some things to know about hydrographic surveys:

  • Purpose

Hydrographic surveys are used to create nautical charts for mariners, and to support activities such as offshore exploration,              construction, and maintenance. They can also be used to determine the route of subsea cables.

  • Methods

Hydrographic surveys use a variety of methods, including multibeam echo sounders, which send out beams that bounce off                the seafloor and return to the ship to record the depth.

  • Data collection

Hydrographic surveys collect data on water depth, navigation channels, structures, currents, tides, and waves.

  • Data analysis

The data collected from a hydrographic survey is processed and analyzed using industry standard software.

  • Data presentation

The data from a hydrographic survey can be presented in a variety of formats, including charts and electronic formats.

  • Maritime nations

Hydrographic surveys are typically conducted by agencies of maritime nations

Hydrographic surveys of rivers and other bodies of water include:

  • Equipment

Surveyors use sophisticated equipment, such as single beam sonar, multibeam sonar, side scan sonar, magnetometer, sub-             bottom profiling, and bottom grabs.

  • Factors

Surveyors take into account the effects of tides, temperature, currents, and waves.

  • Data

Hydrographic surveys produce a scale model that includes natural and man-made features along the watercourse. These                features are represented by text, lines, and symbols on the drawing.

Here are some things that a hydrographic survey can reveal:

  • Water depth

The primary focus of a hydrographic survey, this information is vital for safe navigation.

  • Seafloor composition

Knowing the type of seabed is important for understanding marine ecosystems and planning infrastructure projects.

  • Submerged hazard

sIdentifying shipwrecks, underwater ridges, and other obstacles is important for safe navigation.

  • Water properties

Some surveys may measure salinity, currents, and tides.
